Bahamian culture is impacted by it's African and European heritages. Family life has always been an important value; however, since the start of the 20th century an increasing number of households are being run by single women. This change in home-life is most likely to be caused by the increased education that Bahamian women are now able to receive. The people of The Bahamas have folk customs as well which includes Junkanoo--an annual parade held in Nassau featuring thousands of men dressed in colorful costumes fringed with paper and covered in beads. The folk culture also includes stories on chickcharney and the workings of obia. Sports are another huge part of the Bahamian culture, some of the popular sports including snorkeling, wind-surfing, fishing, sailing, cricket, and football (soccer).
Prior to reading this article, most of the facts could have been know with common-knowledge. Because The Bahamas were founded by Europeans and they inflicted the use of slavery, the African and European heritages. Despite the common sense, it was interesting to learn that home life is more commonly run by women over men in recent years. In addition, the folk culture being common throughout the country allows for the people to bond and grow as a nation. Water sports are huge in this country due to its proximity to oceans.
